Top Ten Reasons to Adopt a Black Cat

Sweet Jeremiah & Flotsam as little babies and bigger boys...

  1. You can always find your black cat in the snow. OK, not much snow in Seattle, but you get the point…
  2. Black goes with everything. It's true. You know it. We know it. You've got your black power suit on, your white cat jumps on your lap, it's all over. But if your black cat wants a little love and affection, no harm done --your look is only enhanced!
  3.  Black cats look like little panthers. Their regal breeding is very apparent under their sleek black coats.
  4. A black cat will match any décor. You won't have to redecorate your house to coordinate with your cat. They are totally willing to pose on gold velvet, white velvet, pink velvet, or your sofa cushion - to add taste and beauty to any room of your home. They'll perch on the brocade chair; sleep on the rug; curl in the middle of the bed. You name it, they're willing to go to great lengths to help you make your home beautiful. They’re that kind of cat.
  5. Black is beautiful. There's the deep, auburn shaded black, the blue black, the black with tiny white highlights here and there, the sleek black, the fluffy black, the black with bunny-soft fur, the black with yellow eyes, the black with green eyes, the black with grey eyes ... well, you get the picture. Black is not just black; there are as many different kinds of black cats as there are cats!
  6. Bad Luck, Schmuck! When you love a black cat, luck is on your side!
  7. Black cats have more fun. You only thought blondes had more fun. Black cats are fun-loving, playful, full of spark and energy. They try harder to make up for the image they somehow got as dull and dreary. They're like the sun streaming in a window on a rainy day;  like the circus coming to town; they're just plain fantastic.
  8. Black cats are loving. Look, they know their reputation -- scary. They've seen the illustrations -- skinny cats with nasty long teeth. And they're nothing like that. They go overboard to be as affectionate and loving as any fluffy white, pink-nosed bunny kitty could be, and you get all the other benefits too.
  9. Love knows no color! Your cat doesn't care what color YOUR hair is!
  10. And the # 1 reason to adopt a black cat is…
Black Cats are the least likely to get adopted!

This list is borrowed (& slightly adapted) from the website of "It's All About The Cats, Inc", a rescue group in Florida.

Black kitties...

Did you know that it's particularly difficult to find homes for black kitties?

I didn't.

That is, until I started trying to find homes for kitties...

Right now BACC has four (two!) black kitties available for adoption: Jeremiah, Flotsam (adopted!), Ebony, and Sabrina (adopted!) (though she's got some Torti coloring mixed in).  You might also count Iris, who is mostly black but has a fair amount of Torti coloring, as well as Laverne & Shirley (tuxedo kitties), and Domino & Neo (black & white kitties).

Too many kitties waiting too long for homes!!!

Time for Dinner??  (pretty sure this is Jeremiah & Ebony)

If you've got ideas for advocating for black kitties, please post them in the comments.  These little furballs need all the help they can get.

Introducing Peter...

This is Peter.  We just met him yesterday, so we don't know much about him yet.  We hope to get to know him soon.  As you can see, he's a beautiful adult male tabby cat.

He seems a bit shy in the shelter environment.  Won't it be wonderful when he gets a chance to spread his "wings" in a home of his own?

Would you like to meet Peter?  He's waiting to see you at the shelter in Burien.  Please contact them through their Petfinder page.

Introducing Vivian...

This is Vivian.  Like Poonai, she's got a family of her own, but I wanted to share her adorable-ness and happy story with you.

This is what Viv looked like when I first met her.

Vivian was very skittish and nervous when I met her.  So much so that I named her after Vivian, a little girl that I met before SHE had a family of her own...  After joining her forever family, human Vivian blossomed into a sweet, confident, loving little girl.  I wanted the same for this kitty.

And sure enough, little Viv is feisty and fabulous!!!  Keep your eye out for updated pictures!  They'll be here as soon as her human "mom" can get them to me.  What a joy she has been to her family and what a treat it will be to see how she's grown!!!

Introducing Iris...

This is Iris, a sweet lady and a great mama kitty.

My daughter says, "Iris is awesome!!"  As you can see from the selection of pictures below, her markings are simply beautiful.

These pictures were taken yesterday, December 28th.

The photos below were taken in September.

Do you want to meet Iris?  You should!  She's waiting to see you at the shelter in Burien.  Please contact them through their Petfinder page.

More pics of Poonai

Just because my kitty is so darn cute, I thought I'd add a couple of pictures of her.  The first was taken in September, and the next two in October.

Introducing Lila...

This is Lila.  She's probably about a year old, no longer a baby, but a little lady.  The photo below was taken on December 28th.

Let me tell you a secret about Lila...  When we first me Lila, somebody told us that she was a boy.  So, my daughter named her "Scott" after one of her favorite caregivers.  However, she's all girl, so Lila fits her better...

Something else about Lila that's not such a secret...  This girl is seriously photogenic!!!  She poses for pictures like no kitty I've ever met.  See a couple of photos below from October 2nd.

In my book, no other word describes Lila better than "princess".  She sits in comfort looking down on her "subjects" with an air of grace like you could hardly believe.

You've got to meet Lila!  Please visit her at the shelter in Burien.  You can contact the shelter through their Petfinder page.

Introducing Milky Way...

We just met Milky Way yesterday and fell in love with her immediately.  She's such a love bug!  And gorgeous to boot!

Milky Way is about 9 months old, a young lady.  She LOVES to be cuddled and petted, but isn't yet sure about being held.  She's relatively new to the shelter and may be still learning to trust her surroundings.  As you can see in the photo below, though, she's not shy about pets...

We'll post more about Milky way when we get to know her better.  In the meantime, take a look at one more gorgeous picture of this little gal.

If you'd like to meet Milky Way, please contact the shelter through their Petfinder page.  She's at the shelter in Burien.

Introducing Flotsam...

This is Flotsam.  He's a sweet boy who's about five months old.  As you can probably guess, his brother Jetsam has already been adopted.  This photo was taken yesterday, December 28th.

My daughter *loves* Flotsam.  She says, "He's so puffy and he's so cuddly!"  And she also says, "He's playful and funny.  And he does not give up when the toy is too high."

Flotsam is one of 5, four brothers (Flotsam, Jetsam, Jasper, & Jeremiah), one sister, Sabrina (also available for adoption now), and one sweet foster sister, Angel.  Here's a picture the whole crowd with their mama Iris.

And here are a few pictures of Flotsam when he was about 6-7 weeks old.  What a darling!!!

And one more from yesterday.  Here he is, waiting to play...

Flotsam is going to make some family very, very happy.

Want to meet Flotsam?  He's at the shelter in Burien.  Please contact them through their Petfinder page.

Introducing Jeremiah...

This is Jeremiah.  Isn't he a love??

I first met Jeremiah when he looked like this:

Can you guess which one he is??  Me neither.  But I tell you, his mama did a great job with him, his three brothers, his sister, and a darling sickly little foster sister!

Here's Jeremiah when he's grown up a bit...  Maybe six to seven weeks in these photos...

And yesterday, December 28th, at about 5 months...

Jeremiah, his gorgeous mom Iris, his brother Flotsam (Jetsam has been adopted), and sister Sabrina are ready for their own homes!!!  Jeremiah is sweet, playful, and fabulous!!!

Want to meet Jeremiah?  He's in Burien at the shelter...  See their Petfinder page for details!

Introducing Poonai...

This is Poonai.  She's the "Original" Burien Kitty in Ballard.

Adorable, isn't she?  But, before you decide you want to adopt her, you'll need to know that Poonai has her very own family!!!  She's the inspiration for this blog and our decision to volunteer with Burien Animal Care & Control.

This is what Poonai looked like just after we got her.

And this is a more recent photo:

We're biased, but we think she's one of the cutest things we've ever seen...
